Jessica DeSalvo was born a Floridian in 1985. Since birth, her two creative grandmothers had a significant impact on her life. They taught her many different crafts and hobbies. Imagination and fairy tales were apart of her everyday life. Her parents took her to Walt Disney World frequently. While attending the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland, she began working in collage. While studying sculpture, elements of relief started to appear in her work. Her ultimate goal is to stir up a viewer's emotional response to the visual narrative.

Jessica DeSalvoArtist Statement

Currently, I am working with a rich palette of found images and symbolic objects. I am intrigued with the collage process because it allows me to manipulate images, fitting visions and ideas together in unconventional ways. Reconfiguring recognizable images to create a new story is exciting to me. Sometimes, the theme is predetermined, other times the theme emerges during the process of working and reworking the materials and paint. As my experience with this process evolves, my choices are becoming more and more intuitive. Recently I have been adding tactile elements to the surfaces of these works. Bits of cloth, little plastic hearts, and metal trinkets suggest sculptural qualities that appeal to the sensation of touch, evoking a desire to experience the paintings in a more intimate way. Adding to the addition of these actual objects. My process of sewing with wire and thread are bringing the surfaces to life.
