Artist’s Statement

Completed during the fall of 2006, The Day of Judgment was photographed under the night skies of Cortona, Italy.  Substantially influenced by the booklet, Il Giorno del Giudizio (The Day of Judgment), by Giorgio Agamben, Claudia Smigrod created images that address the transformative quality of the camera; the photograph’s ability to create its own truth.

Rooftops illuminated by overcast skies, rain-flooded alleys, and grates of darkness are among the artist’s subject matter.  These indistinct locations create the sensation of doomsday; both announcing the beginnings of time and foretelling the final moments of existence.

The catalogue for the exhibition, authored by Marco Pacioni, addresses Smigrod’s works.
